At 3:40 PM on January 22, 2010 the Peterborough Fire Department received a report of a basement fire. 6 Fire Department apparatus and 17 personnel were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, there was smoke coming out of an entranceway to the basement area of a rooming house. Some of the occupants had already left the building and, upon our arrival, the rest of the occupants were evacuated immediately. A crew advanced a hoseline to the basement area and had the fire knocked down within minutes. 2 occupants were treated by paramedics but did not require hospitalization. 2 other occupants have been displaced from the rooms for at least the night. The fire is under investigation by the Fire Prevention Division of the Peterborough Fire Department.

Peterborough Fire Services responded to the report of a kitchen fire on the seventh floor of 1001 Talwood Dr at 18:34hrs. Additional calls were received reporting smoke on several upper floors of the apartment building. Fire crews arrived on the seventh floor to find the hallway full of smoke and located the apartment involved to discover the fire was out. The building was quickly ventilated and many of the tenants who had evacuated to the main lobby were allowed to return to their units. Three tenants of the fire unit were transported to Peterborough Regional Hospital by ambulance for observation of smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire was cooking related with damage estimated at $5,000. Peterborough Lakefield Community Police were on scene as well as a representative of the Peterborough County Disaster Trust Fund who provided the three tenants affected with temporary accommodation.

Peterborough Fire Services in conjunction with Peterborough Lakefield Community Police and Peterborough EMS responded to a reported structure fire in the vicinity of Park St. N and Dalhousie St. at approximately 2100 hrs. Feb. 19th. On arrival Fire Crews located a fire on the second floor with fire venting and extending to the roof and attic space. Initial reports indicated an occupant trapped on the third floor and multiple fire crews entered the structure for fire attack, search, and rescue. The fire was quickly brought under control however search crews were unable to locate the missing person. All occupants were subsequently located unharmed and out of the structure. Members of The Peterborough County Disaster Trust did attend to assist displaced residents. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation with a preliminary damage estimate of $65000.

Smoke exiting a building on Dublin Street, caused the Peterborough Fire Department to be alerted at 00:31 hours by neighbors. Upon further investigation, an overheated pot of food on the stove, resulted in the tenant being removed and sent to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation. Peterborough Fire Services responded at 18:52hrs to a reported porch fire at a rooming house on Edinburgh Street. On arrival the entire front porch was engulfed in flames and tenants were exiting the building at the rear of the property. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and initiated salvage and overhaul operations. There were no injuries and damage is roughly estimated at $25,000. Fire investigators on scene suspect that misuse of smoking materials contributed to the cause of the fire. Peterborough Lakefield Community Police and EMS crews were on scene and a representative of the Peterborough Community Disaster Trust Fund was also on scene to provide approximately eight tenants who were displaced with temporary accommodation.

At approximately 2:30 this morning the Peterborough Fire Service responded to a garage fire on Wallace Point Road. Firefighter arrived to discover an attached garage fully involved in fire. The rapid action of the 17 responding fire fighters quickly brought to blaze under control preventing the fire from spreading to the attached house. A working smoke detector on the first floor alerted the 4 occupants who evacuated the building and called firefighters from the neighbor's house. Fire and smoke damage to the garage and home is estimated at $75,000. The fire's cause remains under investigation.

Peterborough Fire Services responded at 13:45hrs to a reported barbecue on fire close to the club house at the Lift Lock Golf Club. On arrival Fire crews encountered a fully engulfed barbecue with flames spreading to the exterior wall of the club house which is cladded with wood vertical siding over cement blocks. The fire was under control and extinquished within three minutes with ventilation, salvage and overhaul operations initiated. The majority of damage was kept to the exterior of the building with some damage to an interior washroom ceiling that was removed to check for fire extension. There were no injuries and damage is estimated at $7500 dollars. Cause of the fire is suspected mechanical failure with the barbecue. Peterborough Lakefield Community Police and an EMS crew were also in attendance. The Club House was back in operation approximately ninety minutes after the fire started.

Peterborough Fire Services responded 5 vehicles with 15 Fire Fighters to a reported fire and explosion on Raymond St. in the City of Peterborough. Upon arrival, a large volume of smoke and fire was visible from the first and second floors at both the front and rear of the property with obvious structural damage. Initial reports indicated all occupants were out of the structure however several occupants were unaccounted for. Fire crews entered the structure for search and fire suppression and were able to quickly bring the fire under control. Fire crews remain on scene at this time. Three people were treated on scene by Peterborough Fire Services and Peterborough City/County EMS and subsequently transported to PRHC. The condition of those transported is currently unknown. The incident is currently under investigation by Peterborough Fire Services, The Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service and the Ontario Fire Marshal. Peterborough Utility Services, Enbridge Gas, TSSA and the Peterborough City/County Disaster Trust Fund also attended.

At approximately 7:20 this evening the Peterborough Fire Service responded to the report of a house Fire on Westcott Street. Upon arrival firefighters discovered a second story bedroom fire. The fire was quickly brought under control by the team of 17 fire department staff however the house suffered $60,000 in fire and related damage. One of the seven occupants suffered second degree burns and was treated at the scene by firefighters before being transported to PRHC by ambulance. The fire cause is under investigation by the Fire Prevention Division and Peterborough Lakefield Community Police.

An alarm was received for this address at 19:02 hours, necessitating a full response by Peterborough Fire services. Upon arrival, the alarm was originating from an electrical area of the Hospital, and had set off the fire alarm.This left people stranded in three different elevators. Further investigation revealed that a major component in the electrical supply had failed, causing actuation of an emergency generator. By 20:00 hours all occupants had been removed from the elevators and the alarm system restored to normal. At no time were the elevator occupants in distress or danger. One crew remained on scene until electrical conditions were stabilized.

Just after midnight, Peterborough Fire Services responded to fire in a bedroom in the lower unit of a duplex on Aylmer St.N. 15 fire personnel on 5 fire apparatus quickly searched the building and extinguished the fire with minimal damage. Peterborough Lakefield Community Police, Peterborough County Ambulance, and the City/County Disaster trust fund attended to assist the occupants. Upon arrival 2 occupants were removed from a third story apartment and transported to the Peterborough Regional Hospital. Peterborough Fire Services responded to a reported structure fire at 12:33 pm today. Upon arrival smoke was seen exiting the south side of the structure and was visible inside the front door. A pumper crew advanced a line through the front door and found an area burning in the hallway and behind a closed door off the hall. The main body of the fire was extinguished and then extensive overhall began to track fire spread through floor and wall spaces. There was no one home at the time. Carless disposal of smoking materials is belived to be the cause.

Peterborough Fire Services responded to Rogers Cove in East City to a report of a man walking on the ice distant from shore. When Police Fire and Ambulance arrived the man was not in sight and it was not known where he was. Peterborough fire Services used it's Rapid Deployment Craft to preform a search of the suspected area, no entry holes were found and it was determined the man had safely crossed the ice to the far shore, perhaps using the ice as a shortcut to downtown. Peterbourgh Fire Services remind citizens ice conditions cannot be assumed to be safe as underwater currents can weaken ice in unknown areas causing a cold water drowning hazard

The Peterborough Fire Service responded 6 vehicles with 18 firefighters to a reported structure fire at 00:18 hrs this morning. On arrival, the first floor, of a two and one half storey dwelling, was found to be fully involved in fire. A large amount of smoke obscured the scene. Two individuals had escaped the fire, and it was reported that a 3rd individual was unaccounted for, and may have been trapped on the 2nd floor. Fire crews attempted entry to the second floor for search and rescue, numerous times - while extreme heat and flame prevented access. Fire control was reached after 3 fire hoses were utilized to attack the fire. A search of the dwelling found no persons present, while it was later learned the missing individual - was out of town. There were no injuries. Smoke alarms were operational in the dwelling, and had awoken residents, allowing their escape. Peterborough Lakefield Community Police and the Peterborough Ambulance Service, attended the scene. The Peterborough County Disaster Trust Fund was not required, displaced tenants were staying with friends. Four additional firefighters were called in for duty, to respond to numerous incidents taking place elsewhere in the city. The cause is undetermined, and under investigation by the Fire Prevention Division of the Peterborough Fire Service.

Peterborough Fire Services responded at 04:18 hrs to a George Street apartment building for a reported mattress fire on an outside balcony. A smoldering mattress was found on a second storey balcony and extinquished by firefighters. The tenant had removed the mattress from the apartment unit. There were no injuries and the cause of the $500 dollar fire is careless use of smoking materials. Peterborough fire services responded to a kitchen fire in the basement of a Baker Street bungalow at 07:25 hrs. On arrival fire crews were met by the residents who had gathered on the front lawn and confirmed that everyone was out of the home. A small fire in the basement kitchen was discovered and quickly extinquished by firefighters. The family cat, discovered alive hiding in the basement was removed by a firefighter. EMS personnel on scene assessed the five residents for injuries and smoke inhalation with no injuries reported. Damage is estimated at $75,000 dollars. Cause of the fire was attributed to materials left on the stovetop that were ignited when the stove was accidentally turned on. A Peterborough County Disaster Trust fund representative was in attendance to provide accommodation for the five residents.

Peterborough Fire, along with firefighters from Cavan-Monaghan, Otonabee-South Monaghan, and Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield responded to a structure fire at a 16 unit industrial complex at 347 Pido Road. The call came into Fire Dispatch at around 8:30 pm Saturday evening, and firefighters remained on scene overnight. At least seven of the 16 units in the complex sustained significant damage, as well as the common roof structure. The Peterborough-Lakefield Community Police Service and Peterborough County EMS were on scene providing support to the firefighters. The Salvation Army were also on scene to provide refreshments for emergency responders. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. An investigation will commence Sunday morning.

Witnesses confirmed the fire had been deliberately started by a youth using a cigarette lighter. Fortunately there were no injuries. Peterborough Fire Services including 15 firefighters and 5 trucks responded to a garage fire on Western Ave on this date. Heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from the garage upon arrival. Fire damage was contained to the garage but smoke damage was evident throughout the entire structure. Peterborough Lakefield Community Police were on scene for traffic control and Peterborough EMS was on stand-by. The probable cause was a malfunction in a riding lawnmower stored in the garage. Estimated damage includes damage to a car, motorcycle and lawnmower as well as the building. There were no injuries reported.
