It is important that our firefighters are trained
to recognize the stages of fire and the effects
that fire attack and ventilation will produce.
To meet the needs of an evolving fire service,
Peterborough Fire & Rescue and Phoenix Fire
Training Systems (of Toronto, Canada) worked
together to develop a Live Fire Training System.
| It provides firefighters with a first
hand observation of fire progress from incipient
stage to free-burning stage, and it includes
a comprehensive training program designed
to ensure the learner obtains a complete
understanding of a flashover. |

fire Training Unit in Peterborough |
The
system...
The system pictured below serves as
observation and burn area. It holds a maximum
of 8 observers, and handlines.
The burn unit has a convenient access to load
the burn module, which meets requirements the
Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
A key factor in creating an optimal flashover
atmosphere is the retention of heat within the
unit. This includes the majority of heat retention
inside the burn module and a portion of the
observation module. In order to retain the heat
it is essential to minimize the heat loss through
the walls, the ceiling and the floor in the
desired areas. In order to meet this objective
we selected an insulating material and attachment
method that provides a heat retention efficiency
of 92.7%.
| The Observation Module provides an inside
unobstructed look at "rollover"
and "flashover" in the Burn Module.
This allows the firefighters and Trainer-Facilitator
to use all of their senses as they witness
the natural evolution of the fire. |
